Movie Magic

  • Hitchcock: Notorious
    Hitchcock: Notorious
One of many great pieces. This one seems a pointedly composed visually, like a set of moving silver-dipped photos - though many other Hitchcock films work better storywise. I love him, in part, because of his masterful audience manipulation; believe this is one of his most important contributions to moviemaking, eh, baby Spielberg?
  • Krzysztof Kieslowski: Blue (Three Colors Trilogy)
Krzysztof Kieslowski: Blue (Three Colors Trilogy)
A fav til I die; elemental economy yielding everything
  • John Sayles: Brother From Another Planet
John Sayles: Brother From Another Planet
Watched this one very young and was blown away by the metaphors, the silence(s), creative vision; John Sayles continues to astound & inspire!
  • Ridley Scott: Blade Runner (The Director's Cut)
Ridley Scott: Blade Runner (The Director's Cut)
Not too familiar with this cut directly. Enjoyed this far more than Star Wars, of which George Lucas may be my favorite piece... Anyhoo, this blew me away, and continues to, each time I screen it. Futuristic, dark, cerebral, moody & character-focused :-)
  • David Mamet: House of Games
    David Mamet: House of Games
Mamet brings Hitchcock to the street & I love it! Plays with the language in a way I'd not heard from Hollywood/ moviemaking before that still catches my ear particularly.
  • Paul Verhoeven: Total Recall
    Paul Verhoeven: Total Recall
A smart, fun blockbuster Hooray! [Hmph, I didn't note clearly PV was the ringleader here, good to know]
  • Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing
Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing
Cinematic mural of characters dancing race & gender one hot New York summer day. Work it, my brother!
  • Peter Greenaway: The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
Peter Greenaway: The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
Distinctly remember working on my (film) grant one hot Berkeley summer day, then sneaking off to see this racy movie only to be blown away by Smelling film (whoa!) and that kitchen, oh that kitchen...
  • Pedro Almodóvar: Talk to Her (Hable con Ella)
Pedro Almodóvar: Talk to Her (Hable con Ella)
Perhaps my favorite film of his (yet). Though he's definitely one of my World Idols ;-) Colorific, poignant, far fetched yet accessible, familiar dramedies that move us with curious visuals, story shifts, and everyday people.
  • Steven Soderbergh: Traffic
    Steven Soderbergh: Traffic
Steve is one of those that keeps me excited and not so jaded about the possibilities of American, even Hollywood, filmmaking - bravo and thanks to him!!

  • Michael Jensen: Frontiers
    Michael Jensen: Frontiers
Typically avoid historical fictions, or did. This jumped into my hands at library. May still be my favorite of all with its gorgeous allure, taste of the supernatural, and frank gay depiction - even if a few yesterdays ago. Bravo MJ!
  • Michael Nava: DEATH OF FRIENDS
    Michael Nava: DEATH OF FRIENDS
I cried from feeling the ache of identifying with a recovering alcoholic. (is this why I’ve been hit on by so many around this time? :-)) Nava continues to develop the humanity here, than the mysteries. Kudos and thanks!
  • Paul Russell: SEA OF TRANQUILITY
Sometimes I find art that wastes its title. Has no idea how to live up to it – this one was the opposite and left me swimming for days on end!!! [out of print]
  • E. Lynn Harris: Invisible Life
    E. Lynn Harris: Invisible Life
Sheer power rocked me for years (3!). So pleased by his debut, skipped the 2nd fearing a sophomoric slump, yet found the 3rd just as wonderful, if not groundbreaking. Cheers to a long career!
  • Jim Grimsley: Dream Boy
Haunting. Beautiful. Nicely ambiguous, at points. Decidedly southern. Hooray!
  • Krandall Krauss: The President’s Son
Thank god, I thought we only wrote high-end literature and stories. This hugged my soul and said Dynasty, Dallas, et. al. BEWARE – a tribute will come. * This tipped me to realize more gay pop fictions, etc. etc. will be needed, and bought. Kensington Press exemplifies this. We'll see on the film side as players emerge.
  • Larry Duplechan: Eight Days A Week
Lilting. Great mid-tier, or rather middle of the road author. I’d gladly BEG him for more books! * Like a gay “High Fidelity” …with the white lover and band.
  • Christopher Bram: Surprising Myself
Captures so easily emerging out, and friendship shifts, challenges, etc.
  • R.D. Zimmerman: Closet
    R.D. Zimmerman: Closet
Start of a serial. Set in Minneapolis! My god! Felt the winter and bite of exiting the closet again in a parallel world I know too well, yet have never lived. Bravo, r.d.
  • Alex Sanchez: Rainbow Boys
New entry so may not be sequenced how I want...

Find this curious, though not appealing

CONFERENCE: New AIDS nightmare looms for gay men. "Since 2001, new cases of HIV in the homosexual population in the United States, Europe, Canada and Australasia have been rising by about 1.9 percent per year, the research by the University of Pittsburgh said. Without action to correct this trend -- a return to safe sex or an unexpected medical breakthrough -- the infection rate is set to soar as the population ages."

HereTV! on Google !!!

Google Video to carry Here TV programming

Gay network Here announced Wednesday that it will begin delivering programming through Google Video. The site allows users both to search for content and to download and view it on their computers. This new arrangement will allow computer users to download original series, films, documentaries, and comedy specials from Here for $3.99 per title. "Making Here content available via Google Video is part of our ongoing effort to expand the options for thousands of viewers to access Here however, whenever, and wherever they want," said Here founder and CEO Paul Colichman in a statement. "As the variety of Here programs continues to increase, Here's growing fan base will be able to catch their Here favorites either on TV or now with Google Video on their PCs and eventually on wireless devices as well." (Advocate.com)

I think this distribution model kicks ass; they need to get their content up to par though is the buzz.

Mergers Mania!

i'd love to here some speculations and projection around these mergers...

In other community changes, the New York Blade www.nyblade.com  has merged forces with HX Magazine www.hx.com  as well as with CMI which produced the Gay Life and Gay Erotic Expos to create HX Media. Windows Media which owned the Blade is working with HX on these changes as well which should create a pretty big gay/lesbian publishing empire.

Another empire that's brewing is that will involve Planet Out and Specialty Publications which publishes the erotic magazines Unzipped, Freshmen, Men and 2 magazines. Since it's not been formally announced through a press release it's unclear to me how this (if at all) this will affect Unzipped Video.

Need to meditate more on how I meet some local quality people - for fun, fun fun and otherWise. Is it online (e.g. Friendster, gay.com, gaydar...)? Is it wherever? Actually, how is it wherever, in that everyday way? At mixers? Blind friend dates? What? * I know some of it is presentation of self, a large part, though I feel like it's much about changing my vibrations to be open for this, and asking for it within, deep within (hey, none of that cackling!).

GCN May '05 says According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 8% of US high school seniors have tried the drug [crystal meth] at least once. Well, hooray for that :-( * In Europe, crystal meth use remains virtually unknown, but for a drug that is devouring America how long will we remain untouched. ** Um, why is Europe so in the clear on this? And how can we notate, if not learn + implement from this?

Gay Times mentions A Queer Story an intergenerational love story set in Hong Kong... didn't find on NetFlix or AMZN, so i'm noting, and linking, it here...

Looking at Oct '05 pg. 45 of THE magazine (out of New Mexico), I recognize myself in Richard Tuttle's 40 Days #9. Quite connected to the crayon piece I did December 1991 that I believe is still in my possession.

Gushing write-up of Tampa's GLBT film festival - which was well-sponsored, from this audience member's POV, and structured.

Letter from the Edtior, Out July '05
"I was struck by the fact that almost all the male Hollywood A-listers who are not American have played gay or bisexual characters on-screen, while virtually none of the American have. Russell Crowe played queer in The Sum of Us;Antonio Banderas got gay for Perdo Almodovar and opposite TOm Hanks; and last year alone Colin Farrell connected with men in two movies. Look at their American heartthrob counterparts: Neither Tom Cruise nor Brad Pitt has ever played overtly gay in a movie."

I'm guessing this has to do with different cultural perspectives of gayness & masculinity, eh?

HX 27 May 2005 p. 32
HX: How did you respond to the criticism that the show wasn't an accurate depiction of gay life?
Hal Sparks: If we had five gay guys in an office and the show was about how normal they are, it wouldn't last a season - and it wouldn't create any change. We showed gay people who drank and did drugs and fucked everybody - and you still had to love them.

1) we didn't have to love them, or even like them, though I hear him in saying the story structuring / making a character sympathetic
2) I think this everyday gay thing is the way to go, maybe that's just (for) me though...? Or perhaps I'm carrying this over from pre-SoulFood (tv show) when some argued that seeing black folks in more everyday (dramatic) situations can further the bridges, close the divides between seeing blacks as other types, aliens, etc. * Perhaps this is my writing/visioning challenge? The seed was planted awhile ago, no?

I love this zero-energy homes idea. Can pursue as we get into this property purchasing outlook ;-) * How come this isn't poppin' as much on the Eastern coast/side of the States?

I laughed out loud, and cringed a bit, at this replicating NYC's East Village in Vegas. (Also, Avenue Q has a show up in Vegas as of 27 August - that was a fast year!)

IFP MARKET - a few notes
Was very very cool to hear Norman Jewison speak at the IFP Market's closing. The icing on that cake was Warrington Hudlin being the moderator/interviewer. Reminded me - as many other things have lately - that I am well connected when I want to be and/or get on the vibe. What is the combination like now that my intuition is strong as I clarify and loft my life (energy) with renewed purpose and positioning?? :-)
The panel with Rosie Perez, Mary Kay Place & Yolonda Ross really added to my thoughts o' late around directing, producing (what type of production am I best with), and how a story is still the thing with(out) that attracts and brings them to a project - money or not!

T-shirt line from Chad Allen (not sure if i'd wear or print this considering where i feel things are going soon(er))... Theater is life. Film is art. TV is furniture.

Out May '05 (yes, i'm not on my 60 day cycle for processing periodicals...) mentions X/O Chicago on Halsted (3411 N). I wondered what was there previously... looks like a cabaret/bar named Voltaire - which rings a bell - since 2000.

I'd wanted to google John Scognamiglio, and did... he's editorial director at kensington books.

I love this (quite astute) line from Moby:
"I say that I don't live in America, that I live in the Island State of Manhattan. [Laughs] Manhattan is to the United States as Hong Kong is to China."

Approx. 84% of USA's gays and lesbians have valid passports vs. 29% of the general (USA) population
-from Out Traveler
That's almost triple the percentage!!?!! Is that because of parenting, or a sense of not questing beyond the easily known?

Story idea/sci fi: gay marriage is allowed, yet each/all marriages must procreate at least once... population explosion*

Oh how fun - Ex-'Idol' Constantine signs ABC sitcom deal with Kelsey Grammer

Yank!

Successful, if not quiet B'way or Off B'way material as is.

I think it relies too much on dancing for expressiveness where we need more story and character development; however, I would recommend taking a look at the songs to next level, and consider making a movie of this. I believe a lot of actions and montages with music, or even (additional?) songs better evidence this story, and more importantly that history and period.

Cast was stellar as was the direction. Lyrics were pretty good, music was great; story (book?) was quite quite strong, I felt. Great chance for a singer-actrees to play the small female roles. *I definitely need to write some thing(s) with men in uniforms - well, beyond photo shoots...;-)

Glad I went & got in; show was inspiring, touching and darling.

"...the median age for new infections is around 40..."
WHOA! Find this very curious, though not totally surprising. The juxtaposition with gay retirement communities really comes to me looking back at this piece now. * As we (slowly) peek ahead, I wonder how american queers AND boomers may move us around age(ism). (Perhaps this is too embedded in the greater Western world though...?)
"I know that we are beyond the place where any traditional prevention campaign will be effective."
Glad someone else said it. Now, let's be a lil sassy, if not radical, and move on this!
"Albeit in all the wrong places and all the wrong ways, these guys are basically looking for love."
Sometimes, I wonder if we say this too generally, and often, overlooking how connection, community, open feelings, and sharing can curb this wave. As well, a number of prevention outfits seem to solidly prove this over and over again, not that this is an agenda item of the Right to support. Be curious to see smart arguments from elsewhere about why we need to address the easier ills and so of today's world, so we might collectively move on to the next items.

Go Hudlins!

Filmmaker hired as new President of Entertainment.

*BET President and CEO Debra L. Lee has announced filmmaker Reginald Hudlin as President of Entertainment for BET, effective immediately.
The noted director will split time between BET programming and production hubs in Los Angeles and New York, and company headquarters in Washington. He becomes chief programming executive in charge of BET’s music, entertainment, specials, sports, news and public affairs, film and program acquisitions, home entertainment and programming development units.
“There is no media property with greater growth potential than BET,” said Hudlin. “I’m grateful for Debra, Bob (Johnson, Co-founder) and Tom’s (Freston, Co-President and Co-Chief Operating Officer of Viacom) confidence in my ability to shape the creative future of the network. I look forward to working with them as we guide BET to the next step in its evolution with a wide range of original programming.”
Hudlin exploded on the scene with older brother Warrington in 1990 with production of the comedy “House Party.” His filmography also includes “Boomerang,” “The Great White Hype,” “Bebe’s Kids” and
“The Ladies Man,” among his producer and directorial credits.

"The supermodel/glamazon image was a planned strategy to push buttons and turn heads, while using familiar imagery to invoke an icon. One part Dolly Parton, two parts Barbie, a cup of Cleopatra Jones and a dash of Disney." -- RuPaul to the San Diego gay magazine Buzz, May 13.

(+) Ponder (for creative and/or writing piece)
"Whatever happened to gay rage? Remember the bar brawl brashness of Stonewall? Police cars toppled and lit on fire after Toronto's bathhouse raids? When younger homosexuals get nostalgic for the heady days of gay lib, they oughtn't yearn so much for the unfettered drug-taking and unprotected sex. They should long to be mad as hell and not going to take it anymore. I still maintain that if you lift the lid off any queer, you'll find a cauldron full of seething rage hidden inside. Left unchecked, it will simmer endlessly as a soup of self-loathing, or reduce to a thick stew of bitterness." -- Pink Triangle Press Publisher & Editor at large David Walberg, writing at Xtra.ca, May 11.

Is SF still gay mecca?

Hmmm, perhaps, depends on how you view the rainbow…

Endearing to read this fuzzy Men of All Colors Together (MACT) anniversary writeup

Though I wasn't not amused about budding/young journalists following procedure & being censored

18 & over moves into being a pesky law for the naked on Internet sites

I love that Jim David wrote this commentary about same ol' same ol' for coming out on Fox's '24'

Very happy with this ad (campaign) about Crystal Meth scourge visually, not sure about impact though. Still needs more people to people, not people to media, contact to turn the tide.

Advocate redesigns for Pride

Guess I might've been wiser had I grabbed a free copy at NewFest. Ah well, that's what newsstand visits are for ;-)

Closeted and under fire

I'm so glad I read this tonight. Maybe it's passing the army & marine recruiting station each workday, or maybe it's playing with a (contemporary) storyline including men in uniforms. Regardless, plenty to work with here, easily evidenced by this solider's writing.

Kluger interview

Steve Kluger sounds alive, a bit goofy, and ready to sell some screenplays - bonno! I'm so happy his AfterElton site is around and active :-)

I really enjoyed ALMOST as well as his boys+baseball book years ago. Finding it funny he's a screenwriter turned novelist to get his stories into the light of day.
