Movie Magic

  • Hitchcock: Notorious
    Hitchcock: Notorious
One of many great pieces. This one seems a pointedly composed visually, like a set of moving silver-dipped photos - though many other Hitchcock films work better storywise. I love him, in part, because of his masterful audience manipulation; believe this is one of his most important contributions to moviemaking, eh, baby Spielberg?
  • Krzysztof Kieslowski: Blue (Three Colors Trilogy)
Krzysztof Kieslowski: Blue (Three Colors Trilogy)
A fav til I die; elemental economy yielding everything
  • John Sayles: Brother From Another Planet
John Sayles: Brother From Another Planet
Watched this one very young and was blown away by the metaphors, the silence(s), creative vision; John Sayles continues to astound & inspire!
  • Ridley Scott: Blade Runner (The Director's Cut)
Ridley Scott: Blade Runner (The Director's Cut)
Not too familiar with this cut directly. Enjoyed this far more than Star Wars, of which George Lucas may be my favorite piece... Anyhoo, this blew me away, and continues to, each time I screen it. Futuristic, dark, cerebral, moody & character-focused :-)
  • David Mamet: House of Games
    David Mamet: House of Games
Mamet brings Hitchcock to the street & I love it! Plays with the language in a way I'd not heard from Hollywood/ moviemaking before that still catches my ear particularly.
  • Paul Verhoeven: Total Recall
    Paul Verhoeven: Total Recall
A smart, fun blockbuster Hooray! [Hmph, I didn't note clearly PV was the ringleader here, good to know]
  • Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing
Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing
Cinematic mural of characters dancing race & gender one hot New York summer day. Work it, my brother!
  • Peter Greenaway: The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
Peter Greenaway: The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
Distinctly remember working on my (film) grant one hot Berkeley summer day, then sneaking off to see this racy movie only to be blown away by Smelling film (whoa!) and that kitchen, oh that kitchen...
  • Pedro Almodóvar: Talk to Her (Hable con Ella)
Pedro Almodóvar: Talk to Her (Hable con Ella)
Perhaps my favorite film of his (yet). Though he's definitely one of my World Idols ;-) Colorific, poignant, far fetched yet accessible, familiar dramedies that move us with curious visuals, story shifts, and everyday people.
  • Steven Soderbergh: Traffic
    Steven Soderbergh: Traffic
Steve is one of those that keeps me excited and not so jaded about the possibilities of American, even Hollywood, filmmaking - bravo and thanks to him!!
  • Deathtrap

Top 10 Queer Reads

  • Michael Jensen: Frontiers
    Michael Jensen: Frontiers
Typically avoid historical fictions, or did. This jumped into my hands at library. May still be my favorite of all with its gorgeous allure, taste of the supernatural, and frank gay depiction - even if a few yesterdays ago. Bravo MJ!
  • Michael Nava: DEATH OF FRIENDS
    Michael Nava: DEATH OF FRIENDS
I cried from feeling the ache of identifying with a recovering alcoholic. (is this why I’ve been hit on by so many around this time? :-)) Nava continues to develop the humanity here, than the mysteries. Kudos and thanks!
  • Paul Russell: SEA OF TRANQUILITY
Sometimes I find art that wastes its title. Has no idea how to live up to it – this one was the opposite and left me swimming for days on end!!! [out of print]
  • E. Lynn Harris: Invisible Life
    E. Lynn Harris: Invisible Life
Sheer power rocked me for years (3!). So pleased by his debut, skipped the 2nd fearing a sophomoric slump, yet found the 3rd just as wonderful, if not groundbreaking. Cheers to a long career!
  • Jim Grimsley: Dream Boy
Haunting. Beautiful. Nicely ambiguous, at points. Decidedly southern. Hooray!
  • Krandall Krauss: The President’s Son
Thank god, I thought we only wrote high-end literature and stories. This hugged my soul and said Dynasty, Dallas, et. al. BEWARE – a tribute will come. * This tipped me to realize more gay pop fictions, etc. etc. will be needed, and bought. Kensington Press exemplifies this. We'll see on the film side as players emerge.
  • Larry Duplechan: Eight Days A Week
Lilting. Great mid-tier, or rather middle of the road author. I’d gladly BEG him for more books! * Like a gay “High Fidelity” …with the white lover and band.
  • Christopher Bram: Surprising Myself
Captures so easily emerging out, and friendship shifts, challenges, etc.
  • R.D. Zimmerman: Closet
    R.D. Zimmerman: Closet
Start of a serial. Set in Minneapolis! My god! Felt the winter and bite of exiting the closet again in a parallel world I know too well, yet have never lived. Bravo, r.d.
  • Alex Sanchez: Rainbow Boys
New entry so may not be sequenced how I want...

HereTV! on Google !!!

Google Video to carry Here TV programming

Gay network Here announced Wednesday that it will begin delivering programming through Google Video. The site allows users both to search for content and to download and view it on their computers. This new arrangement will allow computer users to download original series, films, documentaries, and comedy specials from Here for $3.99 per title. "Making Here content available via Google Video is part of our ongoing effort to expand the options for thousands of viewers to access Here however, whenever, and wherever they want," said Here founder and CEO Paul Colichman in a statement. "As the variety of Here programs continues to increase, Here's growing fan base will be able to catch their Here favorites either on TV or now with Google Video on their PCs and eventually on wireless devices as well." (Advocate.com)

I think this distribution model kicks ass; they need to get their content up to par though is the buzz.

Good piece discussing 'What is LOST anyways, and how does it keep engaging folks' with such a loose mythology, or world? ;-) * This sense of imbalance and potential non-payoff (on a big scale, at least) is mainly why I don’t bother with the show.

Appreciated the one year later (new) MoMa update. My summation of the article, and visit there: A stifled canon.

I’m dumbfounded by AOL/WB bringing ‘vintage TV’ online for free. What a great, grand expierment; I’m confident very good things will come from it.

This idea of building prisons (that are band-aiding vs. solving, curative) that cost more per person than K-12 (!) education is so crazee to me... So I peeped this site I learned about c/o Utne Reader

What does Mark Hughes' "BuzzMarketing" say about "the five most frequently written news stories..."? (Book review here.)

Irish Movie Screens Going All-Digital
Stat: Irish movie lovers have the second highest level of cinema attendance in Europe.
Stat: There are already hundreds of digital venues across Asia, specifically in China, Singapore, and India. (Utne, Jul/Aug '05, p. 21)

Need to meditate more on how I meet some local quality people - for fun, fun fun and otherWise. Is it online (e.g. Friendster, gay.com, gaydar...)? Is it wherever? Actually, how is it wherever, in that everyday way? At mixers? Blind friend dates? What? * I know some of it is presentation of self, a large part, though I feel like it's much about changing my vibrations to be open for this, and asking for it within, deep within (hey, none of that cackling!).

Learned about: http://bldgblog.blogspot.com/2005/10/foodscaping.html
Akiko Ida and Pierre Javelle (a French pastry chef/arts photography team) create landscapes out of food: mushrooms, kiwis, salads, ice cream, watermelons, cakes. Cauliflower, even. The result is actually really funny and great, and can be seen through the duo's own photographs.

GCN May '05 says According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 8% of US high school seniors have tried the drug [crystal meth] at least once. Well, hooray for that :-( * In Europe, crystal meth use remains virtually unknown, but for a drug that is devouring America how long will we remain untouched. ** Um, why is Europe so in the clear on this? And how can we notate, if not learn + implement from this?

OK, why are we spending waaay more per prisoner than (K-12) student? Very uncool, people, VERY!

How to Act Like a Designer - thanks Daniel Pink :-)

I love this example of reframing:
When he came to Ogilvy, he says, its security guards were dressed like zoo attendants: maroon jackets with piping, ill-fitting polyester pants. Collins commissioned outfits that looked like something a concierge might wear at a W Hotel: black jackets, gray crew-neck sweaters, tailored pants. Soon after, one of the guards stopped him in the lobby. "I can take my daughter out for a cup of coffee at Starbucks now and not look like a security guard," he said. "It looks like I work at Ogilvy & Mather." The next day, Collins says, you could even see the difference in the way they stood. Something had happened. "That's how design can change people."

I enjoyed this FC article about why it can be so hard to change our way

Love this line from Marshall Goldsmith (FC May '05 p 98): Listen hard to what you don't want to hear

Another line from same issue p. 82: To become aware of the possibility of the search is to be onto something. Not to be onto something is to be in despair.

I enjoyed learning about how artist Ingo Gunther is creating themed globes from various political implications. Globe #175 asteroid impacts struck me immediately as a scifi story's visual seed. (yes, i know we've had quite a few books, movies, etc. on this sort of thing. that's why this realtime seed could be a curious touchstone to work from... maybe it isn't really involved, just inspiring.)

Catchup Blog 2

Letter from the Edtior, Out July '05
"I was struck by the fact that almost all the male Hollywood A-listers who are not American have played gay or bisexual characters on-screen, while virtually none of the American have. Russell Crowe played queer in The Sum of Us;Antonio Banderas got gay for Perdo Almodovar and opposite TOm Hanks; and last year alone Colin Farrell connected with men in two movies. Look at their American heartthrob counterparts: Neither Tom Cruise nor Brad Pitt has ever played overtly gay in a movie."

I'm guessing this has to do with different cultural perspectives of gayness & masculinity, eh?

HX 27 May 2005 p. 32
HX: How did you respond to the criticism that the show wasn't an accurate depiction of gay life?
Hal Sparks: If we had five gay guys in an office and the show was about how normal they are, it wouldn't last a season - and it wouldn't create any change. We showed gay people who drank and did drugs and fucked everybody - and you still had to love them.

1) we didn't have to love them, or even like them, though I hear him in saying the story structuring / making a character sympathetic
2) I think this everyday gay thing is the way to go, maybe that's just (for) me though...? Or perhaps I'm carrying this over from pre-SoulFood (tv show) when some argued that seeing black folks in more everyday (dramatic) situations can further the bridges, close the divides between seeing blacks as other types, aliens, etc. * Perhaps this is my writing/visioning challenge? The seed was planted awhile ago, no?

I love this zero-energy homes idea. Can pursue as we get into this property purchasing outlook ;-) * How come this isn't poppin' as much on the Eastern coast/side of the States?

I laughed out loud, and cringed a bit, at this replicating NYC's East Village in Vegas. (Also, Avenue Q has a show up in Vegas as of 27 August - that was a fast year!)

IFP MARKET - a few notes
Was very very cool to hear Norman Jewison speak at the IFP Market's closing. The icing on that cake was Warrington Hudlin being the moderator/interviewer. Reminded me - as many other things have lately - that I am well connected when I want to be and/or get on the vibe. What is the combination like now that my intuition is strong as I clarify and loft my life (energy) with renewed purpose and positioning?? :-)
The panel with Rosie Perez, Mary Kay Place & Yolonda Ross really added to my thoughts o' late around directing, producing (what type of production am I best with), and how a story is still the thing with(out) that attracts and brings them to a project - money or not!
